On September 20th the United Nations will meet to consider the steps required to accelerate progress towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). While there has been some important progress towards reducing poverty we are still significantly off track to achieve the MDGs and halve poverty by 2015.
Add your voice by signing the letter to the Prime Minister and Minister
for Foreign Affairs, calling on the Australian government to work with other UN members to ensure that a MDG rescue plan is adopted at the upcoming meeting of the UN General Assembly.
The rescue plan needs to address aid quantity and quality; aid being focused on health, education, water, sanitation and gender equity; and on good governance. Australia along with the other UN nations needs
to wholeheartedly commit to this plan
You can also show your support for achievement of the MDGs by participating in Stand Up - the largest worldwide movement against extreme poverty, Stand Up and Make a Noise for the MDGs is taking place from 17 – 19 September 2010.
You can attend one of the Stand Up events being organised. Alternatively you can hold an event at your schools, university, workplace, church, community group or at home to raise awareness about the need to tackle poverty. We will supply you with all the resources you need to run your event.
We need action now if we are to get the MDGs back on track and halve global poverty by 2015.
