Below are some sites that are dealing with an issue here in SA. In the state budget, it was announced that Adult re-entry schools would be restricted to those aged only between the ages of 16 to 21 years of age. Those over the age of 21 would need to find alternative pathways for education. There are exceptions to be made. But realistically, if a person needs to re-train or upgrade their qualifications (ie TAFE or uni) and needs to have done certain subjects that they didn’t do or are out of date, they are no longer going to have the option o get the grounding in these subjects before they attempt them through the other pathways.
Nor does it address the illiteracy that exists within Australia. Through my work, I have met a number of people who have difficulty with literacy and numeracy. While it may seem strange to have people who still struggle with literacy and numeracy issues, there are really people who have issues with this and they need help in order to go further in any area of their life, and not just on a educational front.
There are many reasons why people don’t complete high school when they are teens. My partner is one of them. He lost his father when he was 12 years of age and he left school before completing year 10 so that he could earn money to support his mother and sister. He went onto join the army and found he couldn’t do some jobs due to his incomplete education. He wasn’t the only one who faced this either. There are many others who can similar, but different, stories. People who have unfulfilled dreams that are going to go un-realised simply because of the life circumstances that have been dealt to them.
Education is a right not a privilege. Education is different for everyone, but to be told that you are not entitled to a certain sort of education based on age or financial situation is just wrong.
